I have marked the hard work and dedication shown by those involved in Fife Folk Museum over the last 50 years, by putting down an Early Day Motion in Parliament. The museum is a great place to visit and a huge asset to Ceres and the wider area. It also relies on volunteers. If you would like to know more about how you can get involved please visit the website www.fifefolkmuseum.org/
or call 01334 828180. The text of the parliamentary motion can be found at www.parliament.uk/edm/2017-19/1172

Today I met with representatives of Kilrenny, Anstruther and Cellardyke Community Council and owners of small businesses and organisations in Anstruther who have all voiced concern about the loss of the RBS branch and the impact on the local economy. I will continue to push RBS to reinstate the ATM which was well used and was an essential source of cash for visitors.
I have also received a reply to my letter asking RBS to explain why its has reduced the amount of time its mobile service will visit towns and villages across North East Fife including Anstruther. This is the response I received this week. It is simply not good enough.
I would like to hear from anyone across the constituency who has been adversely affected by the closure of RBS branches over the last few years. Please get in touch by email stephen.gethins.mp@parliament.uk

The UK government can no longer continue being deaf to the growing chorus of calls to protect the UK’s continued membership of the customs union after Brexit.

Reports in The Telegraph today suggests that the EU has rejected outright Theresa May’s proposed solutions to the Irish border question.

The article quotes a senior EU diplomat who has said that the UK government’s plans were subject to “systematic and forensic annihilation,” and that it was “made clear that none of the UK’s customs options will work. None of them.”

The news follows the UK government’s defeat in the House of Lords earlier this week, as peers voted in favour of the UK staying in the customs union after Brexit - it was the government's first defeat as the Lords began their scrutiny of the EU Withdrawal Bill.

Following the vote in the Lords, the influential Westminster Liaison Committee – which is made up of cross-party committee chairmen, including my Westminster colleagues Pete Wishart MP and Angus MacNeil MP – tabled a motion which calls on the UK government to “include as an objective in negotiations ... the establishment of an effective customs union”.

We are just 10 weeks away from the crunch summit at which the Irish border issue was due to be settled – and less than one year away before the UK plans to leave the EU – yet astonishingly, the UK government has failed to deliver any meaningful solution.

Earlier this week the UK government suffered a humiliating defeat in the House of Lords over the UK’s continued membership of the customs union. A day later, the influential cross-party Liaison Committee has pushed for a debate over the customs union, and now the EU has reportedly rebuked Theresa May’s plans. The UK government can no longer continue being deaf to the growing chorus of calls to protect our economy, businesses and labour market by remaining in the customs union.

There is clear momentum and political support for the UK to remain in the customs union.

The Tory government must bring to an end their pandering to the extreme Tory Brexiteers, whose agenda will do untold damage to the economy and jobs for years to come.

“The SNP has consistently called on the UK government to support Scotland and the UK’s membership of the customs union – which is crucial in protecting businesses and the living standards of millions of people across the UK.

It was good to attend the Levenmouth Transport Appraisal Engagement Workshop held in Leven this morning. Reinstating the rail link is of vital importance to the future of Levenmouth and the wider area and along with SNP colleagues including local MSP Jenny Gilruth, I will continue to press for this to become a reality. I'm glad to see the campaign getting cross-party support as well as backing from local businesses and the community. To find out more visit www.lmrc-action.org.uk/ ... See MoreSee Less

The UK Government has let the people of North East Fife and Tayside down by breaking its promise to transfer staff working at HMRC to the DWP when Sidlaw House closes.
This u-turn is simply a slap in the face for local people who have worked hard to deliver a high level of service for HMRC and had hoped their futures would be secure with the move to DWP.
Dundee is benefiting from a great deal of investment by organisations and businesses which recognise its potential and the commitment of people living in North East Fife and Tayside who travel into the city every day. It is not acceptable to move these jobs elsewhere.
