Crowd-funded court challenge aims to stop Boris suspending Parliament
North East Fife MP Stephen Gethins has joined forces with colleagues in the Liberal Democrats and Labour in a cross-party bid to block Boris Johnson from proroguing Parliament and preventing a deeply damaging ‘No Deal’ Brexit.
The new Prime Minister has made it clear he intends to steam-roller on with leaving the EU on October 31 despite the harm this will do to the economy, especially in Scotland where 80,000 jobs are at risk.
Stephen Gethins MP, who is also the SNPs Foreign Affairs and Europe spokesperson, confirmed he has backed a crowd-funded legal challenge and will work with Remain supporting colleagues including new Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson to stop Boris Johnson suspending Parliament in the run up to October 31.
“This is a crisis and I am backing legal efforts which could prevent him and the Tory party from ignoring the democratic will of Parliament by stopping it from sitting.
Stephen Gethins MP said: “Boris Johnson has tried every tactic in the book to forge ahead with Brexit on October 31. He has no idea or care about the damage this will do to our economy, people’s jobs and the protections and benefits we currently have as members of the EU. The impact of his ‘Brexit at all costs’ obsession is already causing untold damage to the UK with stock markets slumping and public confidence in the Government at an all time low.
“This is a crisis and I am backing legal efforts which could prevent him and the Tory party from ignoring the democratic will of Parliament by stopping it from sitting. I will be working with colleagues in the SNP as well as the Liberal Democrats, Labour and others, to stop this government from taking us over a cliff edge which will be deeply damaging to North East Fife, Scotland and elsewhere in the UK.”
